FAQ: “Do your garden rooms require much maintenance?”

Our garden rooms are virtually maintenance free, due to our use of high-quality materials and choice of specification:

  • We use a Kingspan interlocking thermal roof system. The roof is a high spec composite powder coated metal skin panel system with a highly insulated core, giving exceptional insulating properties. The roof is virtually maintenance free requiring no replacement membrane or servicing.
  • Aluminium powder coated windows and doors in anthracite grey with double glazing (10-year guarantee).
  • As standard we use ground screws to construct the foundation, they carry a 25-year guarantee. The foundation system raises your building off the ground to allow air flow underneath, this improves thermal efficiency and helps maintain a dry area. The ground screw is an innovative, efficient, time-saving, and cost-effective solution that provides a ground anchor for both large and small construction projects.
  • Structural insulted panels (SIPS) are a high-performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). SIPS are manufactured under factory-controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. The SIP panel is then wrapped in a waterproof breathable membrane. This breathable membrane acts as a one-way valve and allows natural moisture to escape out of the building. As standard we use SIP panels in the construction of the floor and walls of our garden rooms.
  • High-quality composite decking for exterior.

We advise customers that the following are the recommended maintenance requirements for your garden room:

  • Clear the gutters of leaves and debris, especially if your garden room is positioned near trees, it would be best to clean the gutters every six months or so.
  • Use Osmo Oil UV Protection on to the cladding every 12-18 months to maintain a fresh look and keep the natural colours only Canadian Cedar can produce.

As standard we use high quality Western Red Cedar, it is the ideal natural material for cladding garden rooms and outdoor buildings due to the natural preservatives contained within the wood, making it resistant to rot and decay with no additional chemicals or preservatives needed. The natural oils and properties of Canadian Western Red Cedar make the cladding virtually maintenance free as it is naturally durable so there is no need to treat this product for longevity.

Of course, it’s possible to leave the cedar without any treatment at all. Western Red Cedar is naturally rot resistant and still performs well without a finish. When left untreated and exposed to the sun’s oxidising UV light, Western Red Cedar fades and bleaches to a beautiful silvery-grey finish. Therefore, if you’re after the weathered cedar look you simply don’t need to apply any treatment.
